Jean Chrysostome sur la communion de Judas

International audienceThe opinions of the Fathers on the question whether or not Judas was present at the Lord's Supper are divided: On the one side John Chrysostom, Augustine and the early Christian Iconography are positive about it; on the other Ephraem the Syriac, Hilary of Poitiers and the Apostolic Constitutions deny him being present. Cyril of Alexandria sometimes is in favour, sometimes against his presence. Origen writes that Judas has taken the bread, but has not eaten it. Finally, authors like Theophanes of Nicea evoke a physical or sensible presence at the Supper only, not a spiritual one. Chrysostom himself endorses a tendency already existing in other Fathers. Reacting against a symbolic vision, he introduces a realistic conceptualisation of liturgy, insisting on the reality of the eucharistic sacrifice. We need to see, however, whether the Lord's Supper scene already represents the celebration of the Eucharist. If according to John Chrysostom the celebration of the Eucharist is the same as the Lord's Supper and nothing less, how can the presence of Judas be justified? What preoccupies Chrysostom and those who with him defend the position that Judas really took part in the Lord's Supper and communion, it is not so much the fate of Judas, but the pastoral aim with regards the audiences, those who listen, that drive him: that one does not receive the Holy Mysteries for one's condemnation (1Cor. 11:27-32).Les opinions des Pères sur la question de la présence de Judas à la Communion sont partagées : les uns (Jean Chrysostome, Augustin et l'iconographie paléochrétienne) se prononcent affirmativement ; les autres (Ephrem le Syrien, Hilaire de Poitiers et les Constitutions Apostoliques) négativement. Chrysostome pour sa part accentue une tendance amorcée déjà par d'autres Pères, qui, réagissant contre une vision symbolique, avait introduit une conception réaliste de la liturgie en insistant sur la réalité du sacrifice eucharistique. Reste à savoir si la Cène représentait déjà la célébration de l'Eucharistie. Si d'après Jean Chrysostome la célébration eucharistique est la même que la Cène et elle n'a rien de moins, comment la présence de Judas à la Communion pourrait-elle être justifiée ? Ce qui préoccupe Chrysostome, et ceux qui comme lui défendent la position que Judas a réellement communié, ce n'est pas tant le sort de Judas que le souci pastoral envers les auditeurs, les ouailles, à savoir : ne pas recevoir les Saints Mystères pour sa condamnation (1Cor. 11:27-32)
