International audienceThe opinions of the Fathers on the question whether or not Judas was present at the Lord's Supper are divided: On the one side John Chrysostom, Augustine and the early Christian Iconography are positive about it; on the other Ephraem the Syriac, Hilary of Poitiers and the Apostolic Constitutions deny him being present. Cyril of Alexandria sometimes is in favour, sometimes against his presence. Origen writes that Judas has taken the bread, but has not eaten it. Finally, authors like Theophanes of Nicea evoke a physical or sensible presence at the Supper only, not a spiritual one. Chrysostom himself endorses a tendency already existing in other Fathers.
