L’atelier de potier médiéval de la Picaudière (La Haute-Chapelle, Orne) : four, soles et combustible

International audienceAt the end of the 20th century a programme of field work was carried out concerning the beginning and the development of the stoneware industry in southern Normandy. It permitted the identification of several medieval production sites. At la Picaudière kilns were discovered close to clay pits from which the earliest Normandy stone wares were made in the late thirteenth century.The excavation of a longitudinal pottery kiln produced three successive kiln floors. Dating by archaeomagnetic analysis (second half of the 13th century) confirms the chronology provided by the ceramic forms and by the written sources. Laying on the floor of the earliest kiln, fragments of charcoal from deciduous beech and oak all of large calibre were collected.À la fin du xxe siècle, une prospection thématique programmée sur l’apparition et le développement de l’artisanat du grès céramique en Normandie méridionale a conduit au repérage de plusieurs ateliers de potiers médiévaux. L’atelier de la Picaudière a été mis au jour près de carrières d’argile utilisée pour fabriquer, dès la fin du xiiie siècle, les premiers grès normands.Le four à pots, longitudinal, a livré trois soles de foyer successives. Sa datation par analyse archéomagnétique (seconde moitié du xive siècle) conforte ainsi la chronologie fournie par la typologie céramique et par les sources textuelles.
