First attempt, on the eve of modern geology, Léonce Élie de Beaumont hypothesizes the occurrence of "uplifted craters" (cratères de soulèvement) and "uplifted systems" related to the age of the successive mountain belts. This rigid system, crowned with the "pentagonal network" theory, eventually collapsed. Second attempt, at the end of the 19th century, Eduard Suess replaces the "uplift" hypothesis by that of the "downwarps", at the origin of the oceans.
