International audienceAfter spending his childhood in La Rochelle, followed by a solid protestant education in Geneva, Louis Benjamin Fleuriau de Bellevue started a series of geological field trips through Italy, Switzerland, Southern Germany, Sicily and Malta. In 1793 he was back in La Rochelle, where he quickly became known and respected for his scientific activities, as well as for his philanthropic action. He made himself famous to European geologists when he published several memoirs dealing with both very general questions and more regional problems.
