International audienceThe first part of this paper presents how the sufis read the terms east and west from their commentaries on scriptural sources, in particular Koranic. We emphasise the symbolic dimension of these two concepts and their use in following the spiritual path. For the sufis, there is no opposition between East and West, but rather an ontological complementarity that merges into one as man reaches out of the horizontal plane to recover his vertical dimension. In the second part we address the biography of three persons who, in different times, had life stories that display many similarities.
