Manuscrit d'auteurInternational audienceIn this paper, we examine the past perfect as a translinguistic category, i.e. its homologue forms in English, French and German, and more particularly the function of these forms in a narrative text, comparing the German Plusquamperfekt in a short story and its translations in four target texts in French and four in English: This descriptive study strongly suggests that the past perfect is fundamentally a background form in a narrative, whose translation is therefore not strongly constrained. In order to describe the specificities of these forms in their respective tense systems, we draw on Reichenbach's model which, with a few modifications, allows to articulate the morphological and semantic aspect...
