Le plus-que-parfait dans le récit, une étude trilingue: sens, morphologie et contexte

Manuscrit d'auteurInternational audienceIn this paper, we examine the past perfect as a translinguistic category, i.e. its homologue forms in English, French and German, and more particularly the function of these forms in a narrative text, comparing the German Plusquamperfekt in a short story and its translations in four target texts in French and four in English: This descriptive study strongly suggests that the past perfect is fundamentally a background form in a narrative, whose translation is therefore not strongly constrained. In order to describe the specificities of these forms in their respective tense systems, we draw on Reichenbach's model which, with a few modifications, allows to articulate the morphological and semantic aspects of the question.Dans cet article, nous examinons la relation pouvant exister entre la morphologie et la sémantique des formes verbales à l'exemple, assez peu étudié, du plus-que-parfait que nous étudions en tant que catégorie trans-linguistique sous ses formes homologues en allemand, anglais et français. Plus précisément, nous nous interrogeons sur la fonction de cette forme en comparant les occurrences en allemand dans une nouvelle et la traduction de ces occurrences dans quatre versions en français et quatre versions en anglais. Il semble ressortir de cette étude descriptive que le plus-que-parfait, dans la narration, est fondamentalement une forme d'arrière-plan, ce qui laisse une liberté assez grande pour sa traduction. Pour décrire les spécificités de ces trois versions du plus-que-parfait dans leur système verbal respectif, nous nous inspirons du modèle de Reichenbach qui, moyennant quelques modifications, nous paraît permettre l'articulation des aspects morphologiques et sémantiques de cette question
