The Global Ramifications of the Black Lives Matter movement

The purpose of this thesis is to identify the global implications of the Black Lives Matter since 2013. Since its origin in 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement has spread across the US, appealing to audiences of not only black bodies, but also to underrepresented populations that face oppression under the institutions in which they live. The movement became a global phenomenon after the murder of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That expansion is what this thesis aims to examine. Why was the expansion global and not just within the US? Why did the killing of a black man in the US spark a movement that reaches across the globe? There have been numerous studies of the BLM movement, however few target major themes that come into play that make the movement an attractive platform.
