Com o avanço computacional, o Método dos Elementos Discretos (MED) tem se constituído uma ferramenta útil para o estudo de materiais granulares, oferecendo uma alternativa à abordagem (muitas vezes conveniente) de se idealizá-los como meios contínuos. Para que o método seja empregado e o material representado adequadamente, é necessário gerar previamente uma amostra de partículas, que de preferência respeite uma distribuição granulométrica dada e uma porosidade imposta.
