No presente trabalho se aborda o cálculo de forma usando o formalismo das formas diferenciais. Isso fornece uma abordagem unificada e consistente para computar derivadas de forma de ordem superior e evitar as tediosas manipulações envolvidas pelo cálculo vetorial clássico. A derivada exterior de formas diferenciais é a linguagem natural para expressar princípios de conservação subjacentes a muitos modelos baseados em equações diferenciais parciais.
