Bessarione e il monachesimo italo-greco: l'Oriente nell'Italie meridionale: Il cardinale Bessarione, la regula Sancti Basilii e la riforma dei monasteri italo-greci alla metà del XV secolo

International audienceIn the monastic and cultural history of the medieval West, the “rule of St Basil”—which was never considered a rule in the Byzantine East—is a text of highest importance, however devoid of meaning, and reflecting the fantasy of a West fascinated by the Orientale lumen of the Byzantine world. Within this story, Southern Italy played a central part from the beginning, in the 4th century, till the end, in the 14th century. In Southern Italy was St Basil’s Asketikon translated into Latin by Rufino from Aquilea and in this very place also emerged from the first time the expression of regula S. Basilii (in the conclusive chapter of St Benedict’s rule, chapter 73). At the other extremity of the time sequence, Southern Italy is still prominent, with the creation and organization of a “rule of St Basil” and an Ordo S. Basilii for the Greek monasticism of Southern Italy, both under the supervision of Cardinal Bessarione. This latter, ex metropolitan bishop of Nicea, conceived, on the pope’s request, a rule aimed at being that of all the Italo-Greek monasteries. Our contribution aims at presenting the methodology used by Bessarione to write his rule and in particular in which manuscripts he picked, within Basil’s Asketikon, the content of the chapters of his own monastic rule.Dans l’histoire monastique et culturelle de l’Occident médiéval, la « règle de saint Basile », qui n’était pas considérée comme telle dans l’Orient byzantin, constitue un texte essentiel, mais détourné de son sens et reflet des fantasmes d’un Occident admirateur de l’Orientale lumen du monde byzantin. Dans cette histoire, l’Italie méridionale joua un rôle majeur depuis le début, au ive siècle, jusqu’à la fin, au xve siècle. C’est en effet en Italie méridionale que fut traduit en latin l’Asketikon de saint Basile par Rufin d’Aquilée, c’est également là qu’apparut pour la première fois l’expression de regula sancti Basilii (dans le chapitre conclusif de la règle de saint Benoît, le chapitre 73). À l’autre bout de la chaîne chronologique, on retrouvera l’Italie méridionale, dans la création et le fonctionnement, pour le monachisme grec de l’Italie du Sud, d’une « règle de saint Basile » et d’un « ordre de saint Basile », tous les deux sous le patronage du cardinal Bessarion. L’ancien métropolite de Nicée conçut en effet, à la demande du pape, une règle destinée à être celle de tous les monastères italo-grecs. Notre contribution souhaite présenter la méthodologie de Bessarion pour la composition de sa règle, et notamment les manuscrits dont il disposait pour piocher, au sein de l’Asketikon basilien, le contenu des chapitres de sa propre norme monastique.Nella storia monastica e culturale dell’Occidente medievale, la «regola di san Basilio» — che l’Oriente bizantino non considerava una regola — costituisce un testo di maggior importanza, pero munito di un senso distorto, e diventato l’espressione del fantasma occidentale ammirativo per l’Orientale lumen del mondo bizantino. In tale storia, l’Italia meridionale giocò un ruolo essenziale dall’inizio, nel IV secolo, fino alla fine, nel Quattrocento. Fu nell’Italia meridionale che venne tradotto in latino, da Rufino, l’Asketikon di san Basilio, fu anche il luogo dove nacque l’espressione di regula sancti Basilii (nel capitolo conclusivo della regola di san Benedetto, il capitolo 73). All’altra estremità del filo cronologico si ritrova l’Italia meridionale, nella redazione e l’organizzazione, per il monachesimo greco dell’Italia meridionale, di una «regola di san Basilio» e di un Ordo S. Basilii, ambedue sotto l’egida del Card. Bessarione. L’ex metropolita di Nicea elaborò, su richiesta del papà, una regola progettata per diventare quella di tutti i monasteri italo-greci. Il nostro contributo si propone di presentare la metodologia del Bessarione per comporre la sua regola, e in particolare i manoscritti usati per selezionare, nell’Asketikon basiliano, il contenuto dei capitoli della sua propria norma monastica
