International audienceThe call for “the rights of nature” emerged on the international stage as part of Rio+20. In late 2011, Bolivia made a proposal that explicitly used this phrase, placing its contributions in direct continuity with past texts: the World Charter for Nature (1982), the Rio Declaration (1992), the Earth Charter (2000), and the World Peoples’ Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cochabamba (2010). Chapter VII of Ecuador’s new 2008 Constitution refers to the rights of nature. The demand has since been taken up by various social movements, not without causing some upset. At the same time, others have vigorously rejected it, considering it to be incompatible with an emancipatory agenda. Who is right? ...
