Internalisation of nano- and microparticles, particularly by macrophages, is a fundamental process impacting the efficacy of particulate delivery systems. A greater understanding of how particle properties such as size, hydrophobicity, surface chemistry, surface charge, and shape influence this process will therefore lead to the design of more effective drug delivery systems and improved clinical outcomes.
