Recombination initially occurs as an in trans template-switching event between two parental viruses (represented by numerical genome schematics). This event generates a mixed population of viruses containing a variety of imprecise recombinants with sequence duplications, as represented by the duplicated numbers of the schematic genomes. The pool of imprecise recombinants subsequently undergoes resolution where these duplications may be lost via an, as yet undetermined, in cis deletion process or via further rounds of in trans template-switching recombination events.</p
