Psychoanalytic psychotherapy with the elderly: a necessary reflection

This work aimed to understand how elderly patients are being treated, perceived, seen and heard by eight psychologists with a psychoanalytical theoretical basis grounded in Winnicott. It is a qualitative research, in which the psychoanalytical method was used to analyze the interviews conducted with each psychologist. As a research instrument, the semi-open questionnaire was used. After a bibliographic search, which sought to understand how the elderly person was seen by the different societies that existed in the past and how it is possibly seen by contemporary society, as well as subjective aspects related to the aging process and entry into old age; one analysis was performed for each interview and two subsequent analyzes, in which four interviews were grouped in each. The final discussion included five main points that emerged predominantly from the analyzes carried out. They are: The old age that dwells in me x The old age that shows itself to the other, which addressed otherness issues that permeate aging; Real death x death in life, which pointed out the subjective impact caused by psychologists when they face death in the care of the elderly; Forgiveness, an issue that revealed the sensitivity of psychotherapists to perceive the path to be taken in psychotherapy with elderly patients who apprehend themselves to be close to death, in the sense of reframing purely subjective issues in the life that has already passed; Studies and operation in the field of prevention, a topic of discussion that pointed to the need to debate and study more about the possibility of psychotherapeutic work with the elderly that would walk towards prevention and, finally; the last topic of discussion that emerged from the analysis: The lack of demand and the very few search of the elderly for psychotherapy, a topic that launched a challenge to contemporary psychotherapists, in the sense of welcoming the time of the elderly and their questions, working in order to produce demand for this population, acting in the opposite direction of the functioning currently found in the social environment.Pesquisa sem auxílio de agências de fomentoDissertação (Mestrado)Este trabalho procurou entender como pacientes idosos estão sendo tratados, percebidos, vistos e ouvidos por oito psicólogos de base teórica psicanalítica winnicottiana. É uma pesquisa de cunho qualitativo, na qual foi utilizado o método psicanalítico para analisar as entrevistas realizadas com cada psicólogo. Como instrumento de pesquisa, foi utilizado o questionário semiaberto. Após levantamento bibliográfico, que buscou compreender como o idoso foi visto pelas diversas sociedades e povos que existiram no passado e como possivelmente é visto pela sociedade contemporânea, bem como aspectos subjetivos relacionados ao processo de envelhecimento e entrada na velhice; foi realizada uma análise para cada entrevista e duas análises posteriores, nas quais foram agrupadas quatro entrevistas em cada. A discussão final contemplou cinco pontos principais que emergiram de maneira preponderante das análises realizadas. São eles: A velhice que habita em mim x A velhice que se mostra ao outro, que abordou questões de alteridade que permeiam o envelhecer; Morte real x morte em vida, que apontou o impacto subjetivo causado nos psicólogos ao se depararem com a morte no atendimento ao idoso; O perdão, questão que revelou a sensibilidade dos psicoterapeutas em perceberem o caminho a ser realizado em psicoterapia com o paciente idoso que se percebe próximo da morte, no sentido de ressignificar questões puramente subjetivas da vida que já se passou; Estudos e atuação no âmbito da prevenção, tópico de discussão que apontou para a necessidade de se debater e estudar mais a respeito da possibilidade de um trabalho psicoterapêutico com o idoso que caminharia no sentido da prevenção e, por fim; o último tópico de discussão que emergiu das análises: A falta de demanda e a pouca procura dos idosos por psicoterapia, tópico este que lançou um desafio aos psicoterapeutas contemporâneos, no sentido de acolher o tempo do idoso e suas questões, trabalhando no intuito de produzir demanda a essa população, atuando no sentido contrário do funcionamento encontrado atualmente no meio social
