Environmental education: conceptions and practices of teachers from public schools in Ituiutaba MG

The environmental education emerges in a context that der ives from the inappropriate usage of collective goods in different temporal spatial scales. Therefore, these environmental questions reflect worldwide, affecting many human societies. Thus, the need to create conscientious citizens who are committed to soc ial environmental issues is one of the biggest challenges concerning this century’s environmental education. At that, many discussions regarding the environmental education approach take place in formal educational spaces. Following this prospect: how is t he educational staff prepared to handle this topic? In this respect, this research aimed to comprehend the concepts, and the environmental education practices of the teachers at public schools in Ituiutaba MG. To the development of this paper, the qualit ative research theme was chosen. The methodological procedures that sustained this study were centered in theoretical reviews of theses, dissertations, books and articles that approach the present topic; literature research from the schools’ educational po litical projects (Projetos Político Pedagógicos PPP), in addition to interviews with different teachers from the last years of elementary school. The collected data was organized, systematized and analyzed. That made it possible to determine the dominanc e of naturalist and anthropocentric views concerning the teachers’ environmental perception. From that, we could realize that the perception of environmental education of those surveyed, is nestled in the conservative perspective scope. That was possible t he moment they showed a strong concern about the conservation and preservation of natural sources. Assim, a necessidade de formar cidadãos comprometidos com as questões socioambientais é um dos grandes desafios da educação ambiental neste século. Diante disso, muitas discussões são realizadas com relação à abordagem da educaçã o ambiental em espaços formais. Seguindo esta perspectiva, como os docentes estão preparados para tratar desta temática? Neste sentido a pesquisa objetivou compreender as concepções e as práticas de educação ambiental dos professores em escolas públicas do município de Ituiutaba MG. Para o desenvolvimento do trabalho optou se pela pesquisa qualitativa como caminho a ser percorrido. Os procedimentos metodológicos que ampararam o estudo foram centrados na revisão teórica em teses, dissertações, livros e artig os que abordam a temática do trabalho, pesquisa documental com a consulta dos Projetos Político Pedagógico (PPPs) das unidades escolares, além de entrevistas com os professores de diferentes disciplinas do ensino fundamental dos anos finais. Os dados obti dos foram organizados, sistematizados e analisados e assim foi possível constatar o predomínio das visões naturalista e antropocêntrica na percepção ambiental dos docentes. Percebemos que as concepções de educação ambiental dos entrevistados estão situadas no âmbito da perspectiva conservadora, ao demostrarem uma forte preocupação com a preservação e conservação dos recursos naturais. No entanto, compreender a problemática ambiental requer uma visão complexa de meio ambiente em que a natureza integra uma re de de relações não apenas naturais, mas também sociais e culturais
