International audienceThe following qualitative research questions the specialization of students at university and their motives for committing themselves to a PhD. The authors show how the specialization of these students, beyond their commitment to achieve their doctoral work, is first a matter of relation to knowledge, remote from any professional integration strategy. The "Alceste" lexical analysis of a corpus of 16 semi-structured interviews reveals the significant presence of syntagms which show the preference of 8 PhD students specialized in history and 8 PhD students specialized in mathematics for a given type of knowledge.
