The commentary of the Quran by the Moroccan Sufi Aḥmad Ibn ‘Ajība (1160-1224/1747-1809) : methods and themes

La présente étude propose une analyse exhaustive d’al-Baḥr al-madīd fī tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-majīd (La Mer étendue - Commentaire du Coran glorieux), exégèse coranique intégrale, rédigée de 1214/1799 à 1221/1806 par le soufi marocain Aḥmad Ibn ‘Ajība (m.1224/1809). Bien que les raisons d’une telle entreprise restent incertaines, al-Baḥr al-madīd répond à la vision spirituelle du maître al-‘Arabī al-Darqāwī (m. 1239/1823), fondateur de la voie Shādhiliyya-Darqāwiyya, à laquelle Ibn ‘Ajība se rattache en 1208/1793-1794. Cet enseignement, qui s’ancre dans le « renouveau soufi », fait de l’association de l’orthodoxie sunnite et du soufisme le vecteur véritable de la sainteté.This dissertation offers an exhaustive analysis of the integral Quranic exegesis called al-Baḥr al-madīd fī tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-majīd (The Immense ocean - Commentary of the glorious Quran), written between 1214/1799 and 1221/1806 by the Moroccan Sufi Aḥmad Ibn ‘Ajība (d. 1224/1809). Although the reasons why such a task was undertaken are not yet completely understood, it definitely echoes the spiritual vision of the Sufi master al-‘Arabī al-Darqāwī (d. 1239/1823), founder of the Shādhiliyya-Darqāwiyya Sufi Order, which Aḥmad Ibn ‘Ajība joined in 1208/1793-1794. This exegesis, which is part of “the Revival of Sufism”, postulates the necessity to unify the Sunni orthodoxy with Sufism in order to achieve true sainthood
