Along with the Dragon Quest series, Final Fantasy is one of the most famous Japanese role-playing games. As well as being a forerunner in gameplay innovations such as the "Active Time Battle", which transformed our notion of turn-based combat, the Final Fantasy games have the essential characteristic of systematically renewing their universe from episode to episode. Except for a few exceptions, each work has its own imaginary world — sometimes mixing elements of fantasy, science fiction or steampunk — and its own heroes and its own story, even if some details and motifs sometimes cross over from one game to another
