This illumination illustrates an episode from the Merovingian period (6th century), which is part of the dark legend of Queen Frederegonde, mistress and then wife of King Chilperic — whom she would eventually kill — who according to the texts is guilty of numerous crimes. Accused by the bishop Gregory of Tours of being a witch herself, Frédégonde, standing imperiously on the left of this picture, nonetheless organized a torture in Paris in 582 following the death of one of her sons: she ordered that women whom she accuses of an evil act be burned or "routed" (in the center and on the right), anticipating the widespread killings in 15th- and 16th-century witchhunts.téléchargeabl
