The Griffin

The griffin on this print is a well-known example of a half-eagle, half-lion hybrid. Not all fantastic creatures come from mythology. We find mention of griffins living on the edge of the known world and protecting treasures — a function that would later be assigned in the imagination to dragons — in ancient works of natural history. Fantasy has taken hold of this idea: far from being imaginary, such creatures would indeed exist, but in distant and unexplored countries.téléchargeabl
