Through an analysis of literary texts and personal correspondence from 1800-1850 in Germany, England and France, my dissertation examines the conventions and influence of literary representation of Jewish female characters. In response to the nascent visibility of the Jewish woman, I ask, to what degree does a direct knowledge of historical Jewish women contribute to the creation of modernized literary representations and, in turn, to what degree do literary stereotypes influence Jewish women's self-perception and public presentation?
