International audienceEver since Emmanuel Laroche first suggested translating the Hittite theonyms ending in -sepa/-zipa as "genie, spirit, demon", many hittitologists have systematically translated those names as "genie", thus over simplifying Laroche's hypothesis. A more nuanced and contextualized study of these theonyms, however, shows that they instead denote a great variety of supernatural entities: major or minor deities, male or female entities, at least one divinized object and a demon.
