La reconversion paradoxale des sportifs français : Premiers enseignements d’une enquête sur les sélectionnés aux jeux olympiques de 1972 et 1992

International audienceThe current paper, excerpted from a survey based on questionnaires and interviews bears upon the second career of some French Olympic shortlisted sportsmen. After having wondered how starting a second career can be thought of in sociology, this article sheds light on a paradox: if those who are surveyed get access -as a gist- to high profile positions socially speaking, most of the time those positions remain tied to the world of sport, thus provoking a feeling of concealment. In addition to the little convertibility of a sporting background, our paper also shows that an objective upward social mobility is linear only in appearance in so far that the second professional career is often lived as a downgrading in comparison with the position the sportsman held in sport previously.Ce texte, tiré d’une enquête par questionnaires et par entretiens, porte sur la reconversion de sélectionnés olympiques français. Après avoir questionné la façon dont on peut, penser la reconversion en sociologie, ce travail met en évidence un paradoxe : si les enquêtés accèdent à des positions majoritairement situées dans le haut de l’espace social, celles-ci restent la plupart du temps ancrées dans l’espace sportif, produisant alors un effet d’enfermement. Outre la faible convertibilité du capital sportif, l’article montre aussi que l’ascension objective n’est linéaire qu’en apparence dans la mesure où la reconversion professionnelle est souvent vécue comme un déclassement par rapport à la position sportive antérieurement occupée
