International audienceThis article proposes that a version of the Apollonius of Tyre story generally dismissed as irrelevant to the (probably collaborative) Shakespearean play--namely, the extensive French prose redaction of François de Belleforest--inflected the dramatic adaptation of the recognised sources. Belleforest's redaction is distinctive for its development of a narrative persona corresponding to the play's Chorus, for its comparable exploitation of several elements found in the play-text, but also for its self-consciousness regarding its quasi-theatrical status as a "tragicomedy".
