Abstract

International audienceChennai, the capital of South India, presents a true example of linguistic and cultural diversity. Although the majority of the inhabitants of Chennai have Tamil as their mother tongue, many of them from the other states of India have a second language. For example, one child in school speaks Tamil, English and Hindi, three languages are taught in school. But it is common to see children with two mother tongues (Kannada from Karnataka and Malayalam from Kerala) who also speak Tamil, English and Hindi.
