Transferts, circulations et réseaux franco-allemands au XVIIIe siècle: Les périodiques savants germanophones, esquisse de biographie intellectuelle

The study of scholarly relationships between France and Germany in the 18th century assumes that the question of cultural transfers should be broadened to include the investigation of transnational circulations and networks. This article outlines such an approach by focusing on German-language scholarly periodicals that flourished in the Holy Roman Empire between 1660 and 1800. Due to the political and university polycentrism of the Holy Roman Empire, approximately 1 000 scholarly journals were founded throughout the 18th century. These journals included news of the scholarly world (scientific projects, experiments, appointments, obituaries, etc.) and reviews of recently published books. The author suggests an “intellectual biography“ (Jean-Claude Perrot) of German scholarly journals, which investigates the existing information about a publication or readers’ request and follows its traces through correspondences, acquisition of books, their excerption, the (not altered or modified) publication of such excerpts as book reviews in scholarly journals, the reception of these books reviews and their integration (compiled with other information where appropriate) into bio-bibliographical dictionaries that formed the framework of the historia literaria, the ‘reporting on knowledge’. An ‘intellectual biography’ of scholarly journals, moreover, would investigate the topographical structures formed by internal networks, intellectual relationships and the intermediality of such periodicals. This article examines and outlines the influences and effects of the German-French exchange on the different parts of the intellectual chain of learned texts.L’étude des relations savantes entre la France et l’Allemagne au XVIIIe siècle suppose d’élargir la problématique des transferts culturels à celle des circulations et des réseaux transnationaux. Une telle étude est esquissée dans le présent article d’après l’exemple des périodiques savants germanophones, qui, en particulier dans le Saint-Empire (en raison de son polycentrisme politique et universitaire) connurent un très grand succès entre les années 1660 et les années 1800. Près de 1 000 journaux savants y furent en effet fondés, destinés à porter à la connaissance du public les nouvelles du monde savant (projets, expériences, nominations, nécrologues, etc.) le contenu des nouvelles parutions savantes par le biais de recensions. Cet article pose des jalons en vue d’une « biographie intellectuelle » (Jean-Claude Perrot) des périodiques savants germanophones, laquelle étudierait la prise de connaissance de telle publication et les souhaits de lecture exprimés dans une correspondance, les modalités de l’acquisition de l’ouvrage, la prise de notes de lecture ou d’extraits, la publication (inchangée ou transformée) de ces extraits sous forme de recensions dans des périodiques savants, la réception de ces comptes rendus et leur intégration directe ou compilée à d’autres informations dans les dictionnaires bio-bibliographiques qui formaient l’ossature de l’Histoire littéraire, enfin les topographies savantes suggérées par les relations journalistiques.
