Documentation des traditions musicales au Vanuatu : Création et vie des archives à l’ère numérique

International audienceVanuatu archipelago, in Melanesia, is noteworthy for its linguistic and cultural diversity. From 2005 to 2008, a linguist, an anthropologist and an ethnomusicologist investigated on musical practices about which very little was known in the North of country. This project allowed us to create a rich corpus of digital audio, photo and video data documenting dances, music, and sung poems from this area. This corpus deposited in institutional archives in Vanuatu and France, it generated a publication of a documentary film (The Poet’s Salary, 2009), an audio CD (Music of Vanuatu : celebrations and mysteries, 2013) and a digital booklet at free access. Since some years, the massive arrival of digital technologies in Vanuatu, in particular mobile phones, brings new ways of conservation and dissemination for music recordings like those we have gathered. In our presentation we will discuss new possibilities that technological development brings in preservation and transmission of musical heritage.L’archipel du Vanuatu, en Mélanésie, est remarquable par sa diversité linguistique et culturelle. De 2005 à 2008, un linguiste, un anthropologue et une ethnomusicologue, ont enquêté sur les pratiques musicales au nord du pays, dont la variété était encore mal connue. Ce projet nous a permis de constituer un riche corpus numérique audio, photo et vidéo, documentant les danses, musiques, et poèmes chantés de cette région. Déposé en archives institutionnelles au Vanuatu et en France, ce corpus a donné lieu à la publication d’un film documentaire (Le Salaire du Poète, 2009), d’un CD audio (Musiques du Vanuatu : Fêtes et Mystères, 2013) et d’un livret numérique en libre accès. Depuis quelques années, l’arrivée massive des technologies numériques au Vanuatu, notamment des téléphones portables, apporte de nouveaux moyens de conservation et de diffusion pour des enregistrements musicaux comme ceux que nous avons rassemblés.
