Les déterminants des investissements des salariés dans les FCPE d'actionnariat salarié

Our research is motivated by an observation. Employee Ownership is a form of savings that is becoming moreand more sought after these days. The concentration of the employee savings into employee ownership isbecoming stronger. These evolutions translate into a fact: employees facing a savings menu tend to chooseEmployee Ownership. The high exposure to risk of the employee-shareholders might have some consequence fortheir assets and their job. For companies, the cost of this exposure to risk can also be high. These observationshave led us to wonder about the causes of employees’ investments in their company stock. Thus, this researchtries to answer the question: Which are determinants of employees’ investments in their employer’s stock? We will specifically focus on the case of Employee Ownership in the French company savings plan (PEE). We can find several results through the empirical study. The exploratory phase shows the influence of the French legal system on the investment choice of employees. It makes it possible to identify four groups of determinantsof employees’ investment in their company stock: the employee stock purchase plans, the context of employeesavings, the company’s and the employees’ characteristics. Concerning the results of the quantitative analysis,they deal with the effect of several dependent variables on three dimensions of the employee investment decisionof a company that is quoted on the stock exchange. We first of all analyze the decision of participating in theemployee stock purchase plan. For those employees who have subscribed to the employee stock purchase plan,we will then study the determinants of the amount invested. The dependent variable is the total amount of thesubscription to the company’s stocks. Finally, we analyse the relationship between the dependent variables andthe exposure to employee ownership. The dependent variable is thus the percentage of the total employeesavings invested in employer’s stocks after the employee stock purchase plan. Most of the obtained results are significant and similar for the three decisions that have been considered (the participation, the intensity of theparticipation and the concentration of savings into employee ownership). However, some results divergeindicating the different nature of three decisions that have been analyzed.Notre recherche est motivée par un constat. L’actionnariat salarié est une forme d’épargne de plus en plusplébiscitée. La concentration de l’épargne salariale en actionnariat salarié est de plus en plus forte. Cesévolutions traduisent un fait : les salariés confrontés à une offre d’épargne salariale ont tendance à sélectionnerl’actionnariat salarié. La forte exposition au risque des salariés actionnaires peut avoir des conséquences pourleur patrimoine et leur emploi. Pour l’entreprise, les coûts de cette exposition au risque peuvent aussi êtreconséquents. Ces constats nous ont conduit à nous interroger sur les causes des investissements des salariés enactionnaires de leur entreprise. Se faisant, cette recherche tente de répondre à la question : Quels sont lesdéterminants des investissements des salariés en actions de leur entreprise ? Nous nous intéressons pour cela plus particulièrement au cas de l’actionnariat salarié dans le cadre des Plansd’Epargne Entreprise (PEE).Les études empiriques apportent plusieurs résultats. La phase exploratoire de la recherche indique l’influence ducadre juridique français sur les choix d’investissement des salariés. Elle permet de mettre en lumière quatregroupes de déterminants de l’investissement des salariés en actions de leur entreprise : les augmentations decapital réservées aux salariés, le cadre de l’épargne salariale, les caractéristiques des entreprises et lescaractéristiques des salariés. En ce qui concerne les résultats des analyses quantitatives, ils portent sur l’effet deplusieurs variables dépendantes sur trois dimensions de la décision d’investissement des salariés d’uneentreprise française cotée. Nous analysons tout d’abord la décision de participer à une augmentation de capitalréservée aux salariés. La variable dépendante est la probabilité de participer à l’augmentation de capital réservéeaux salariés. Pour les salariés ayant souscrit à l’augmentation de capital, nous étudions ensuite les déterminantsdu montant investi. La variable dépendante est le montant total de la souscription en actions de l’entreprise. Nousanalysons enfin la relation des variables dépendantes avec la concentration en actionnariat salarié de l’épargnesalariale totale (Plan d’Epargne Entreprise ou PEE, Plan d’Epargne Retraite Collectif ou PERCO et CompteCourant Bloqué ou CCB). La variable dépendante est alors le pourcentage de l’épargne salariale totale investi enactionnariat salarié après l’augmentation de capital réservée aux salariés. La plupart des résultats obtenus sontsignificatifs et similaires pour les trois décisions étudiées (participation, intensité de la participation etconcentration de l’épargne en actionnariat salarié). Certains résultats divergent cependant et indiquent la naturedifférente des trois décisions analysées
