The well-known seals of Ferry III, duke of Lorraine, were not only influenced by those of his ancestors or his relatives by marriage but also by those of the dukes of Brabant, heirs, as the dukes of Lorraine, of the ancient Lotharingie. Their number, their quality and their signification prove the interest of Ferry III regarding the seals. His vassals were also, more or less, interested by these objects. Observing some of them we can say that the counts used large equestrian seals with the knight holding a sword and the horse galloping to the right whereas the seals of feudal nobility’s members were equestrian or armorial.
