International audienceWe study here the social and occupational mobility of children born of parents born in Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Czecoslovakia, who settled in the Cher region between 1920 and 1939. Upward social mobility is frequent, but results mostly from moves within the working class. The father of the typical family is a semi-skilled or unskilled worker whose sons move up to a skilled occupation. Such patterns imply that the sons’s population is more diverse, in regard to its occupational structure, than the fathers’s population. Part of the diversity can be accounted for when we take into account the occupational story of the fathers, the location of the family or the date of birth of the children. There is a stong lin...
