International audienceThis article presents two aspects in the development of the Nenets written culture: the creation of a written language and the first authors with their works. In the 19th century some missionaries working in Russia's Northern regions tried to create written languages for indigenous peoples in order to translate holy texts and publish religious propaganda. But they did not succeed to spread neither literacy nor Christianity/ The Soviet power intended to integrate the peoples of the North in its structures : in order to implement the new politics in the North it created a new social category of literate indigenous leaders who ere familiar both with their traditional culture and Russian and European literary culture.
