International audienceThe e-Geopolis database allows the measurement of population change in German urban areas from 1820 to 2010. The demographic slow-down explains to a large extent the decline of cities’ populations. This decline is widespread and severe in Germany but the post-war political division corresponds with two different time scales. Cities in East Germany start to decline from 1950, while cities in West Germany continue to grow, benefiting from immigration, before experiencing a fall in population after 2000.
