LE RÔLE DU CINÉMA INDIEN DANS LA PROMOTION D'UN « ESPACE SÉCULARISÉ »

International audienceIn India where access to education is difficult and ethnic and religious conflicts are widespread, Indian cinema has become a vehicle of secular vision. While aiming to reach diverse strata of the population, the films represents a pedagogy of the “ethics of coexistence”.This chapter attemps to look at the Hindi commercial cinema’s discourse on integration while mourning a peaceful and tolerant India supposed to be “united in diversity.”The goal of this study is to analyse the way in which the popular Indian cinema, often considered “superficial” or “simplistic,” represents “the other”, and will analyse two Hindi fiction films, – through two Hindi fiction films, "Gaddar : Ek Prem Katha" (2001, A. Sharma) and "Pinja"r (2003, Ch. P. Dwivedi) to this purpose. Both works portray parallels between Hindu and Muslim communities in Pubjab during the Partition.Dans une Inde où l’accès à l’éducation est difficile, en proie à des conflits identitaires, le cinéma s’impose comme un vecteur d’éducation au sécularisme. Animé par le souci de toucher une population à « multiples visages », il diffuse une pédagogie de « l’éthique de coexistence ». Ainsi nous verrons comment le cinéma populaire hindi construit le discours d’intégration, dans le contexte de deuil d’une Inde « unie dans la diversité », pacifique et tolérante. Je propose de nous intéresser aux films qui s’interrogent sur la cohabitation hindo-musulmane, les conflits indo-pakistanais, le Cachemire et le terrorisme. L’intérêt de notre approche est de démontrer – à partir de deux films hindi Gaddar : Ek Prem Katha (2001, A. Sharma) et Pinjar (2003, Ch. P. Dwivedi) – comment le cinéma populaire, tributaire des conventions esthétiques spécifiques, souvent taxé de « superficiel » ou « simpliste », traite l’image de « l’autre ». Dans ces deux exemples, il met en miroir les deux communautés principales de Pendjab – hindoue/musulmane – au moment de la Partition
