Scharlach Family Collection 1831-1919

This collection contains the personal papers, vital records, and business documents of Alexander, Louis, Henriette, and Emma Scharlach, during the 19th and 20th centuries. Vital and family papers include birth and death certificates, marriage records, and wills. Personal papers include passports, citizenship papers and oaths (Hamburg and Hannover), residency permits, and school papers. Business records include travel permits, Schutzbriefe, court documents from civil suits, and various official concessions and other types of commercial permits.The lottery collector, businessman, and 'protected Jew' (Schutzjude) Alexander Scharlach married Friederike Leopold in 1846 in Bodenwerder, Germany, and they had at least nine children, including Louis, Henriette, and Emma. Alexander was made a citizen of Hamburg through a Bürgereid (citizen's oath), and Louis also became a citizen of Hannover.The original German-language inventory is available in folder.digitize
