National audienceMost of the data brought on by research on Sinitic languages remain widely ignored by typological studies, which still heavily rely upon works on Standard written Mandarin. We show here how research on non-standard Chinese is likely to give a slightly different picture of Chinese typological characteristics. Our first case study deals with diminutive derivation and inflected forms of the verb, which question our general view of Chinese as an analytical, isolating language. Tonal alternation or vocalic alternation, for instance, put the Sinitic languages where they occur quite high up the scale of phonological fusion of formatives to their host, as proposed in Bickel & Nichols (2005, 2007).
