Herbert Ginsberg Collection 1951

This collection consists of a catalogue of Ginsberg's art collection with 138 pages including photos. The 103 objects described in this catalogue are the remains of a collection which numbered 836 pieces in 1923 and which had been amassed over nearly 50 years. These 103 artworks were found after the end of the war in the attic of a Nazi residence in Velp, and are all that remains of Ginsberg's collection. Ginsberg compiled the catalog in 1951 after emigrating to New York City. The third page of the catalog contains a bibliography of earlier catalogs which contain information on the lost artworks. Most of the artworks originated in East Asia, especially China and Japan, along with a number of works from South Asia and elsewhere.Marianne GilbertHerbert Ginsberg was a member of the expert commission for East Asian Art of the State Museum, Berlin (1924-1938) and a co-founder as well as member of the board of directors of the 'Gesellschaft für Ostasiatische Kunst' in Berlin. During the war he fled with his family first to Den Haag, then to Zeist, where they went into hiding and survived the war.
