Explaining an acceleration of surface displacement using an elastic model for the volcanic edifice implies an acceleration of the pressure increase in the magma reservoir and in the mantle, at the base of the magma conduit, at short timescales, that is not realistic. Another direction for research consists in considering that an eruption is due to the rupture of the magma reservoir, and that this rupture is not instantaneous - it can be preceded by progressive damage of the edifice, during which low-magnitude earthquakes occur.
