The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect is the distortion of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectrum due to the inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons off electrons in the intra-cluster medium. Although being know since the late sixties, this effect has barely been used so far; the exploitation of many instruments is currently beginning or will soon begin, allowing the largest cluster surveys ever to be created. However, the use of SZ galaxy cluster surveys as cosmological probes imply the combination of these data with X-ray observations.
