Ditransitive constructions in Purepecha: a hybrid type

International audienceThis paper focuses on the constructions in which the verb, as the nucleus of the clause, is accompanied by three core arguments. In this paper, my purpose is to examine and establish the hierarchical relations between the two objects in ditransitive clauses in Purepecha (formerly known as Tarascan). The central point of discussion is the asymetric alignment which is observed between the two object arguments of the verb. The hierarchy of the two objects is revealed by the morphology and by syntactic accessibility to certain functions or particular processes. The participant, defined as preeminent, shows the greatest proximity to, or intimacy with, the verb. Syntactically, this is the object that aligns with the object of the transitive construction, independent of its semantic role. In this study I point out that the two objects of the ditransitive verb in purepecha display complex behavior. It reveals a hybrid strategy, showing two different semantic facets: (i) an absence of preeminence, and (ii) a preeminence of the recipient. Purepecha displays two different strategies: (i) absence of distinction, with two sub-types: double accusative at morphological level (case marking, pronominal clitics and pronominal suffix), and double object at syntactic level (topicality, focus, inter-clausal coreference control and relativization); and (ii) possibility of distinguishing a direct object (reflexive, passive, antipassive).Cet article s'attache à décrire les constructions dans lesquelles le verbe, en tant que noyau de l'énoncé, est accompagné par trois arguments. L'objectif de cette étude est d'examiner et établir la hiérarchie entre les deux objets des constructions ditransitives en purepecha (aussi connu comme tarasque). Je discuterai plus particulièrement l'alignement asymétrique des deux objets à travers la codification morphologique ainsi que l'accessibilité syntaxique à certaines fonctions ou processus particuliers. Le participant, défini comme prééminent est celui qui montre la plus grande proximité ou intimité avec le verbe. Au niveau syntaxique, c'est l'objet qui présente le même comportement que l'objet du verbe transitif, quel que soit son rôle sémantique. Dans cet article, j'argumente que les deux objets du verbe ditransitif en purepecha montrent un comportement complexe révélant une stratégie hybride. Celle-ci montre deux facettes sémantiques : (i) une absence de prééminence, et (ii) la prééminence du récepteur. Le purepecha développe donc deux stratégies différentes : (i) l'absence de distinction des objets, il existe deux sous-types : double accusatif au niveau morphologique (marquage casuel, pronoms clitiques et suffixe pronominal) et double objet au niveau syntaxique (topicalité, focus, coréférence entre propositions et relativisation) ; et (ii) la possibilité de distinguer un objet direct (constructions réfléchies, passives et antipassives)
