Hugo Steiner-Prag - partial to tales of the fantastic - illustrated the novel by Gustav Meyrink, ‘Der Golem’, published in a luxury edition by Kurt Wolff in Leipzig in 1916. In most illustrations, the Golem is part of the old Jewish quarter of Prague. However, in this later drawing, the bulky figure of the Golem looms on the page in isolation accompanied only by what appears to be a double shadow.Signed and dated at lower right
