This experimental work deals with the mechanisms of penetration of a rigid object ("intruder") inside a model granular medium, in a 2 dimensional dense and disordered configuration of grains. We simultaneously measure the drag force and the motions of grains around the fixed intruder in the laboratory frame. The granular medium is confined in a rectangular horizontal cell on a plate which is led at a constant driving velocity. We have investigated the influence of different control parameters like the packing fraction of the grains (compacity of the granular medium), the cell aspect ratio and the diameters of the cylindrical intruders, as well as the plate translation velocity.
