This dissertation relates to numbers and numerals. It is divided into four parts. Part 1 is about numbers and numerals nowadays in several languages. Part 2 regards numbers and numeral in the past. it conciders on the one hand extinct languages on the other hand the ancestors of languages used today. Part 3 compares the structure of numerals in different languages. Part 4 show an overview of symbols used to form numbers. Further this part is shown how numerals are used in idiomatic expressions, the names of animals and plants, in geographical terms and literature especially in nursery rhymes
