The experiment shows that any insulating liquid subjected to an increasing tension is crossed by a current which strongly grows with the tension until breakdown. For a insulating liquid, breakdown is a destructive phenomenon which degrades in an irremediable way its dielectric behavior, i.e. this one will not be able to hold the same level of tension any more. This phenomenon is the cause of the majority of the failures of the electric material.
