In August 2001, pilot Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services were introduced in a rural mission hospital, Murambinda Mission Hospital (MMH) (Buhera district, Manicaland province, Zimbabwe). These PMTCT interventions were the first routine HIV prevention activities within the hospital. Buhera district has provided the setting for four quantitative and qualitative operational research studies conducted between June 2001 and August 2004. Two main research issues were addressed: 1) the progress in understanding and use of PTMCT services and HIV prevention services in general; 2) the infant feeding practices adopted in the context of HIV and well as the availability of related mother and infant follow-up and support services...
