The most promising silica supported molybdenum or vanadium oxide type catalysts have been studied and developed within the perspective of an industrial application for the direct synthesis of formaldehyde by partial oxidation of methane. An economic study has enabled an evaluation of the catalytic performances needed to obtain a competitive process in comparison with the actual three-step process of formaldehyde production.Catalysts have been prepared and tested and different ways to enhance their catalytic performances investigated.
