Circular Rydberg states of atoms have very peculiar properties which are studied in details in this thesis. In part I, these states are described in the framework of the semi classical theory as well as in the usual point of view of Quantum mechanics. The dynamical symmetries of hydrogenic systems are systematically exploited, since they allow us to understand clearly how these states can be prepared and preserved against various perturbations in a laboratory surrounding. In part II, experiments we have performed on circular states of lithium in view of a precise measurement of the Rydberg constant R are reported.
