This thesis is devoted to the study of very high Q whispering gallery modes in silica microspheres, about 100μm in diameter. For these resonances the electromagnetic field propagates along an equatorial surface ring with tranverse dimensions of the order of the wavelength. These guided modes have very low losses. They exhibit a remarkable combination of strong localization of the field in a small volume and very long storage times for the photons. These two properties render these microspheres ideal as optical resonators for practical applications as well as for cavity QED experiments.
