The work presented concerns the design and the control of a low speed generator for wind turbine applications. A 10 kW, 50 rpm generator (typical of an autonomous wind turbine) is studied. The slotted switched reluctance machine (SRM) with great number of teeth is retained. This structure is well adapted to low speed operation allowing the simplification or the removal of the gearbox used with traditional generators. The electromagnetic structure is optimized by a genetic algorithm coupled with the finite element method. The control of the generator is then treated.
