An original experimental method for probing water dynamics in ion exchange polymeric membranes used for fuel cell application is reported. Based on the use of three complementary techniques, the diffusion of water molecules was investigated on a molecular scale (quasielastic neutron scattering ; 1 pico s < t < 1 ns), on a macroscopic scale (pulsed field gradient NMR ; 1milli s < t < 1 s) and on an “intermediate” scale (NMR relaxometry ; 1 nano s < t < 10 micro s). The experiments were carried out as a function of the quantity of adsorbed water, in the Nafion® membrane and in naphthalenic sulfonated polyimides.
