This work is part of the development of a bistable nematic display. This new electro-optical device requires a better understanding of the anchoring interactions between a nematic liquid crystal and an alignment layer, in order to reach two properties often contradictory: a weak zenithal anchoring and a strong azimuthal anchoring. Our model for the anchoring energy is based on the first two terms of the Fourier expansion. The optical and electro-optical techniques were used to study very weak anchorings, to observe anchoring transitions, as well as to discuss the validity of the model.
